Welcome to Screened History a website combining links to my professional projects and interests. It is a way for people to find out about my work and contact me, as well as a place for me to publish and discuss finished and works-in progress. It is the home of all things relating to my passion: screened history.
Screened history is my alternative name for the field of research that historians have most commonly called ‘history and film’. For my doctoral thesis I traced the history of this field and among many things, began to see the need for a new way of conceptualising the field.
Technology moves at a lightning pace, and the kinds of things historians research and write about, and produce, are now well beyond just film, or television. Thus, the name ‘history and film’ is misleading and limits the possibilities of what might be considered relevant to our interests and engagement.
After over a decade of doctoral research, and further years of research for the book Reframing the Past: history, film and television, as well as the input of the many people who read, and critiqued both, the alternative name for the field that I chose was: screened history.
